Joseph Steele (ODL Fellow 2016-17) is an artist-filmmaker and researcher, and holds a Master’s in Design in Art, Design, and the Public Domain from Harvard University. He is a member at AgX Film Collective and an affiliate at metaLAB at Harvard. He has worked with the Design Studio for Social Intervention and SenseLab at Concordia in Montreal, QC. Joe presented in the 2ndFilm & Visual Studies Conference [image here], at Harvard, and published in Inflexions Journal no. 9, F(r)ictions. His work centers on histories of memory, landscape, and media. Some questions: What are these media that we call memory? How do we reconcile the memory of the past with the future, or imagined memory? Joe has explored these question in his master’s thesis (moving image, sound, and text) titled “Shape Stories: Ecologies of the Self”. Joe’s current research interests include walking, the littoral, the anthropocene, geology/geography, technics, history of photography, and museum studies, especially curiosity cabinets. At OpenDocLab, he will continue the Shape Stories body of work—whether in VR or AR, in essay form, or as an exhibition.
