Indigenous Screen Office (ISO) Collaborating with MIT’s Co-Creation Studio to Host Indigenous Digital Delegation in Spring 2020

Indigenous Screen Office (ISO) is collaborating with MIT’s Co-Creation Studio in Cambridge, MA on an exciting new project to support training, networking and professional development exchange for Indigenous mid-career and senior digital and media creators, researchers and scholars.
A delegation of Indigenous creative professionals from across Canada will be hosted by the Co-Creation Studio at the MIT Open Documentary Lab, which brings together storytellers, technologists, researchers and scholars through the unconventional mixing and matching of seemingly disparate areas of thought and practice. The theme of the gathering will be Indigenous Knowledge, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Worlds.
The delegation will visit with various labs and departments across the university, to exchange ideas with researchers and practitioners that specialize in designing and critiquing AI and digital technologies, computing, robotics, art and technology as well as media studies.
This is an unparalleled opportunity for Indigenous digital and technology-based artists, creators and thinkers to connect with leading researchers and creators in the field, and to build ongoing relationships with the diverse group of people working at or affiliated with MIT.
A group of Indigenous scholars and practitioners at the forefront of Indigenous digital and media practice and research from across Canada will participate as Lead Fellows, including:
• Dr. Heather Igloliorte, Research Chair in Circumpolar Indigenous Arts, Concordia University
• Prof. Jason Edward Lewis, Research Chair in Computational Media and Indigenous Future Imaginary, Concordia University
•Dr. Julie Nagam, Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Arts, Collaboration and Digital Media
• Loretta Todd, Creative Director, IM4 Lab at Emily Carr University
• Dr. Jackson Leween (Two Bears), Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Lethbridge
Project Dates:
The project will take place in Cambridge, MA from April 27-29, plus travel days.
Project Theme:
The focus of the delegation will be explorations on the theme of Indigenous Knowledge, Artificial Intelligence and Digital Worlds.
How to Apply:
Please submit an expression of interest to ISO with the following information included:
- Name and address (applicants must be status or non-status First Nations, Métis or Inuit from Canada)
- Synopsis of your practice and how it intersects with the project theme (max 1 page)
- Bio and/or CV (max 3 pages)
- Links to your work, specifically work you would like to share and discuss as part of this project
- If you are SSHRC-funded, confirmation that you can pay for and arrange your flight and airport transfers.
