Cambridge anthropologist A.C. Haddon filmed and recorded Australia’s Torres Strait Islanders in 1898. In 1906, he organized a primitive sync-sound screening where he played the Torres Strait wax cylinder sound recordings in tandem with the film footage.

In 1902, the Société Pathé Frères– a French gramophone company– acquired the Lumiere film camera patents. Pathé used the Lumiere patents to become one of the largest media equipment and production companies in the world.
