SELECTION OF KEY IDEAS (DIRECTOR’S CONTRIBUTION)
Judith Aston (i-docs): Digital media is a game change offering new ways to communicate. As I have an anthropological background, to me another factor is the advances in cognitive science (studies in perception and what reality is) that ensure that reality is not a pure objective statement or fact. For me it is a three-way dialogue: the importance of cultural context, individual interests and technological drivers.
Hugues Sweeney (National Film Board of Canada): One key factor is the accessibility of publishing independently and fast, as a reaction to the monopoly of large media, with a more diverse point of view. The music industry could give us an insight into which direction interactive documentary could take in a few years.
Mandy Rose (DCRC – University of the West of England): Many of the forms of interactive docs we are seeing now are a result of a fusion between the affordances of the web and the documentary as a cultural form, and yet forms of i-docs predate the current context (forms of participation like Challenge for Change, community programs from the BBC where I work, etc.).
