SELECTION OF KEY IDEAS (DIRECTOR’S CONTRIBUTION)
Yasmin Elayat (18 Days in Egypt): Audience engagement is number one for me as a feature; number two I would say would be embracing technology to shape the form of the story; number three would be being open to nonlinear environments.
Nonny de la Peña (Emblematic Group): In a linear documentary the director can explore one specific archive, but in the field of interactive documentary the author can use and show the entire archive or several archives to convey the story. Transparency is another key feature, as it allows people to engage with the original source material.
Paul Levinson (Fordham University): In linear documentaries it is not possible to contribute to the story, but in the interactive form there’s a much wider range of people who can contribute. This is an essential shift.
Mandy Rose (DCRC – University of the West of England): Interactive documentary has to involve a level of agency on the part of the person experiencing it. But this can vary very much: from simply selecting paths to something where the participant is a creator and contributes to the content.
