Brian Winston (University of Lincoln): I don’t think the image of an explosion in i-docs is a particularly useful way of thinking about it. I think we’re reaching the end of the road again. We reached the end of the road for the first time at the end of the late 50s, and they came up with the direct cinema, and in the late 80s with post documentary, hybrid forms, etc.
Judith Aston (i-docs): People today want the spontaneity of the living moment, which is one of the documentary’s fantastic strengths: that it can capture that sense of moment. There’s a thirst now, and that has led to a flourishing of the documentary genre and an explosion of the form in interactive media.
Ingrid Kopp (Tribeca Film Institute): On the one hand the web made all of this possible, and on the other, the social media, because these are global, ubiquitous and cheap. For me, it all started around 2006.
Jeremy Mendes (National Film Board of Canada): To call it ‘an explosion’ may be an exaggeration because the field is still quite small. It’s difficult to make these projects and there’s no real form yet.
Nonny de la Peña (Emblematic Group): I don’t know if the major decision makers in big organisations will start paying attention to interactive documentary, but certainly something is shifting…
Gerry Flahive (Modern Story): I think there’s been an explosion of awareness in certain circles, in academic circles, in the documentary world, etc., but not, for example, in television, and there are lots of business, commercial or institutional reasons. It’s a small world still.
