Between 1994 and 2000, over 1,300 Shorts were broadcast on the UK’s BBC2 channel as part of Video Nation, a participatory TV project co-produced by Mandy Rose and Chris Mohr. Fusing Mass Observation with handheld camcorders, the project showcased diverse perspectives, foregrounding voices under-represented on TV. Praised for their intensity and unpredictability, the Shorts garnered attention from audiences and critics alike, earning recognition as a landmark project in media scholarship. Now, a quarter century later, Mandy Rose is revisiting the broadcast archive within her MIT fellowship, exploring forms of remediation to facilitate dialogue with contemporary life and framing to encourage reflection on the difference and mutuality expressed in the Shorts.
