Augmented Reality for Education and Activism

Glenn Cantave and Idris Brewster run Movers & Shakers NYC, a nonprofit that uses augmented reality (AR) to highlight underrepresented narratives in public spaces, classrooms, and cultural institutions. Their talk will unpack their advocacy efforts and two of their initiatives: The Monuments Project (a digital catalog of AR monuments of women, people of color and the LGBTQIA+ community), and their educational product UNSUNG (a multiplayer AR experience that highlights 4 female singers of color who used their voices to fight for social change.)

Glenn Cantave is an activist, performance artist, and social entrepreneur. Past pieces include running the NYC Marathon in Chains, a slave auction pop/up AR exhibit and a fast for the duration of Black History Month 2020 calling for a more equitable blueprint of NYC. Glenn has been advocating for equitable representation in public spaces since 2017. He was on the frontlines in Charlottesville, Virginia as a counter-protester at the Unite Against the Right Rally. His photo of protesting in chains went viral around the world. He is a Camelback Fellow, TED Resident, and former artist in resident at Eyebeam.

Idris Brewster is an innovative and passionate individual who uses his technical and creative expertise to disrupt traditional narratives through immersive experiences, all the while empowering others to do the same. His background is in Cognitive Science, Computer Science, and Education. As a creative technologist, Idris has experience spent the majority of his time focusing on blending his work in social activism and immersive media. As an educator, Idris worked for Google, developing an educational program called Code Next that exposes black and brown youth to the world of computer science, allowing them to have the tools to build their own future.Idris’s other passions include hip-hop production and filmmaking! He was the subject of the documentary, “American Promise” winner of the Special Jury Award at the Sundance Film Festival.
