Terrestrial observers of celestial entities account for the movement of those entities as well as our own on Earth; we are all bodies in relative motion. “Radiant drift” is a perspectival effect in describing cometary direction and velocity by ODL Fellow Rachel Devorah.
Pregnant with the fetus who would become her daughter, Devorah made hydrophone recordings from her cervix of the growing baby’s movements for 9 months. After her daughter’s birth birth, Devorah made field recordings of her daughter’s voice in air. radiant drift accounts for the relative motion of Devorah’s daughter and Devorah in spacialized audio as we individuate in gestation, birth, and infancy. The work is a collage of the hydrophone and field recordings, spoken personal narrative, and electronic music.
