Folklore For Techies

Marcel Schouwenaar is the co-founder of the design studio, The Incredible Machine. Initially, his studio focussed on creating concepts for products leveraging the internet of things (IoT). But after encountering many moral dilemmas in his practice — the many cases where business interests conflicted with the stakes of people and society — they decided the culture in the IoT community needed to change. To this end, Marcel co-authored the IoT Design Manifesto and organizes a yearly conference about IoT, ethics, and design (ThingsCon Amsterdam). He also co-founded the Just Things Foundation.
Marcel is still involved with strategy and product development as a designer, but increasingly his work explores the power of design to transform tech culture. In his talk, Marcel will discuss some of his attempts to spark and progress the discourse around IoT.s
