MIT Associate Professor Chris Walley and Filmmaker Chris Boebel – Open Doc Lab affiliates who teach a documentary film class at MIT – are currently in the midst of a Kickstarter campaign to raise finishing funds for their documentary film Exit Zero. (For more info, see www.exitzeroproject. org or a recent Q&A in Belt magazine http://beltmag.com/exit-zero-q-and-a/). The documentary is part of a larger transmedia project that includes a book also called “Exit Zero” and an interactive documentary website conceived in conjunction with ODL and in partnership with the Southeast Chicago Historical Museum. The broader project uses personal and family stories from the former steel mill region of Southeast Chicago to tell the larger story of the long-term impacts of deindustrialization in the U.S. The interactive documentary is currently in the early planning stages and is being supported by an NEH grant.
