SELECTION OF KEY IDEAS (DIRECTOR’S CONTRIBUTION)

Jonathan Harris (Number 27): One key difference is that interactive documentaries try to make the experience with the viewer somehow as an active participant in the story, as in life, the choices we make end up affecting the outcome of our living experience.

Mandy Rose (DCRC – University of the West of England): A feature could be some level of openness in the story, as a kind of participation in the experience and allowing the user to generate and share content.

Daniel Burwen (JauntVR): I believe a lot of web based documentaries become more a software product than a film product. And this is an important difference. There’s a lot of examples, like the work produced by Alexandre Brachet and especially the project ‘Alma. A tale of violence’.

Susanna Lotz (id w): We can quote several features: The user has the possibility to make his/her own path, to have different entry points, a notion of real time, to participate, share, comment, etc.; essentially, the user has an active role in the story. In addition, I would also add the possibilities allowed by different screens and the new types of works: story architecture, programmers, etc.
